Is Ice on a Heat Pump Normal or Does It Require Repair?

Ice on a Heat Pump: What’s Normal and What Requires Repairbest-ac-one-hour-2025 Is Ice on a Heat Pump Normal or Does It Require Repair?

It’s 88 degrees, the house won’t drop below 78, and when you walk out to check the outdoor unit you find frost on the copper line running into it. In August. Ice on a heat pump in the middle of a Minnesota summer feels like a contradiction, but it’s one of the more common calls we take this time of year. It also means something different than winter ice does.

Summer Ice Points to Airflow or Refrigerant

Your heat pump runs as an air conditioner right now. The indoor coil gets cold, warm house air blows across it, and moisture condenses and drains away. That only works if enough air keeps moving over that coil.

Choke the airflow and the coil temperature drops below freezing. Condensation stops draining and starts building instead. Within a few hours you’ve got a block of ice on the indoor coil and frost creeping down the suction line to the outdoor unit which is usually the part you actually notice.

A homeowner off Woodley Street called us in July convinced her compressor was dying. It was a filter she’d last changed at Christmas. Two hours of thaw and a new filter, and she was fine.

The Other Causes Aren’t DIY

If the filter is clean and the vents are open, the list gets shorter and more expensive.

Low refrigerant charge drops coil pressure and coil temperature with it, and low charge almost always means a leak somewhere. A weak blower motor or a slipping capacitor moves less air than the system needs. A collapsed flex duct in a hot Northfield attic can starve the return without a single visible symptom indoors.

There’s also a seasonal one people don’t expect. Run the heat pump when it’s under about 60 outside those cool nights we get in late August and you can freeze the coil on perfectly healthy equipment. That’s not heat pump repair, that’s just asking the system to do something it wasn’t built for.

What to Do Before You CallDenise and Carlos from One Hour Air in front of a homeowners house

Shut the cooling off at the thermostat and switch the fan to ON. That circulates room-temperature air across the coil and thaws it without damaging anything. Give it two to four hours for a heavy freeze.

Put a towel under the indoor unit. All that ice becomes water, and older homes around Greenvale and the Carleton side of town often have air handlers sitting on finished basement floors with a drain pan that can’t handle a sudden dump.

While it thaws, change the filter and open every supply register in the house, including the ones in rooms you don’t use. Closing vents to “save money” is the single most common cause of ice on a heat pump we find in summer.

Then run it again. If it freezes back up within a day, stop cycling it.

Winter Ice Is a Different Story

Come January, frost on the outdoor coil is normal. The unit runs colder than the outside air in heating mode, moisture freezes on the fins, and a defrost cycle reverses the system for five to fifteen minutes to shed it. You’ll hear a clunk, see steam, and feel cooler air from the vents briefly.

Ice on a heat pump in winter only becomes a problem when it doesn’t clear solid buildup filling the fan opening, or a unit that refreezes within the hour. Damp weather in the upper twenties near the Cannon River is when we see it worst, not during deep cold.

Either season, the rule is the same, chipping at it with a screwdriver ends a coil in about ninety seconds.

Guessing between a leak, a failing blower, and a defrost board gets expensive fast, and a compressor running against a frozen coil is the part that eventually fails. Call SouthSota One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning and get it diagnosed properly. A slow refrigerant leak found in August is a repair, while the same leak found after the compressor seizes is a replacement.

Why is there ice on my AC in the middle of summer?

Same equipment, cooling mode. Restricted airflow or low refrigerant drops the indoor coil below freezing, and condensation that should be draining freezes instead. The frost you see on the outdoor line is the tail end of a problem that started inside. This can cause the heat pump to turn on and off constantly.

How long does it take to thaw out?

Two to four hours with the fan running and cooling off. A severe freeze can take longer. Don’t rush it with a hair dryer or hot water, and don’t restart cooling until every bit of ice is gone.

Can I just keep running it?

No. Running a system with a frozen coil sends liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, and that’s the most expensive component in the unit. Shut the cooling off and let it thaw before anything else.

It froze once and hasn’t since do I still need someone out?

If you changed a filthy filter and it hasn’t repeated, you probably found it. If it froze with a clean filter and open vents, get it checked. Repeat freezing almost always means refrigerant or blower trouble.

If it’s shot, do I need a permit to replace it?

Yes. Northfield requires a mechanical permit for heat pump replacement, and your contractor pulls it, not you. A quote with no permit and no inspection is a quote worth walking away from.

Thaw it, change the filter, run it again. If the ice comes back, don’t let it sit through the rest of the season.
